Traditional Slovene Breakfast Project

Traditional Slovene Breakfast project has an aim to educate children about typical food of Slovene origin made of honey, butter, black bread, milk and apples.

On the 20th November, Slovene Food Day, our school organized for the third year already a nature activity day.

The day started with the children transforming the school’s hall into one big dining room that could fit in all students and employed. To make the breakfast even a bigger event we invited some guests: a beekeeper Andrej Sever and Mr. and Mrs. Wraight; a couple from England, who is living in a small village Belčji Vrh.

The head teacher and the projects mentor welcomed everybody present and wished us all to enjoy the breakfast. The whole experience of having a meal together was unordinary but showed to be a very positive experience especially for the children. Andrej Sever, a beekeeper from Slovenian Beekeepers Association, presented to the children a traditional Slovene breakfast and beekeeper’s outfit. Mr. and Mrs. Wraight were also very kind to explain what used to be and what is today a traditional breakfast in England.

Later in the day, the children were divided into different workshops. Some children visited the Stariha farm, where they could see horses, pigs, goats and other farm animals as well as their farm equipment.

Others visited the ‘Belokranjsko izročilo’ gallery, where Bernarda Kump introduced them to her beekeeping work and crafts.

Another group went to VDC Working Centre, where they met with Dušan Milinkovič, who told them some more about bees and beekeeping. He also showed them some beekeeping equipment and honey products.

Back at school the rest of the children were backing traditional Slovene ‘pogača’, gingerbread biscuits and backed apples with vanilla cream. They tasted great.

The school wishes to thank Tomaž Petric for the donated honey, Andrej Sever for his honey and presentation, Mr. and Mrs. Wraight and Bernarda Kump, Dušan Milinkovič and Ana Stariha for their help in the workshops.
