Traditional Slovene Breakfast Project

Traditional Slovene Breakfast project has an aim to educate children about typical food of Slovene origin made of honey, butter, black bread, milk and apples.

On the 20th November, Slovene Food Day, our school organized for the third year already a nature activity day.

The day started with the children transforming the school’s hall into one big dining room that could fit in all students and employed. To make the breakfast even a bigger event we invited some guests: a beekeeper Andrej Sever and Mr. and Mrs. Wraight; a couple from England, who is living in a small village Belčji Vrh.

The head teacher and the projects mentor welcomed everybody present and wished us all to enjoy the breakfast. The whole experience of having a meal together was unordinary but showed to be a very positive experience especially for the children. Andrej Sever, a beekeeper from Slovenian Beekeepers Association, presented to the children a traditional Slovene breakfast and beekeeper’s outfit. Mr. and Mrs. Wraight were also very kind to explain what used to be and what is today a traditional breakfast in England.

Later in the day, the children were divided into different workshops. Some children visited the Stariha farm, where they could see horses, pigs, goats and other farm animals as well as their farm equipment.

Others visited the ‘Belokranjsko izročilo’ gallery, where Bernarda Kump introduced them to her beekeeping work and crafts.

Another group went to VDC Working Centre, where they met with Dušan Milinkovič, who told them some more about bees and beekeeping. He also showed them some beekeeping equipment and honey products.

Back at school the rest of the children were backing traditional Slovene ‘pogača’, gingerbread biscuits and backed apples with vanilla cream. They tasted great.

The school wishes to thank Tomaž Petric for the donated honey, Andrej Sever for his honey and presentation, Mr. and Mrs. Wraight and Bernarda Kump, Dušan Milinkovič and Ana Stariha for their help in the workshops.

Holidaying at the seaside Debeli rtič

Every autumn our pupils go to holidaying at the seaside Debeli rtič, a small coastal town with a health spa for children and youth. This beautiful surrounding, rich with greenery and trees, is perfect for long walks along which one can taste or smell different herbs and fruits as well as play in the playgrounds. The children could go swimming in the indoor or outdoor pool and since the weather was worm, they also went paddling in the sea. Swimming teachers helped some children with their first swings and others became more experienced swimmers. Nevertheless, they all enjoyed playing in the water.

In the evenings, teachers put the children to bed with a good night story. Some of them needed a hug or too, and some children just liked to cuddle. In the end they all agreed they had a great holiday.

S-Factor Final Event

Our school is taking part in an international project S-Factor.

On Tuesday, the 23rd of June 2015, we prepared an event at the Secondary School Črnomelj, to present the S-Factor project to the public.

The event was hosted and enriched with music by a singer-songwriter Erika Kralj. After the S-Factor introduction video, Matjaž Barič, the head teacher of Milke Šobar-Nataše Elementary School, welcomed the guests. The two mentors, Vlasta Lah and Ajda Skrbinšek, then shared some of their impressions from their S-Factor course in London on how to make a video.

Competitive part of the event followed, with the presentation of videos coming from six European countries. Without a doubt, our two videos received the biggest applause, a confirmation to the mentors for a job well done.

For the competitive part of the event, two juries were gathered. In the first jury there was the major of Črnomelj, Mojca Čemas Stjepanovič, head teacher of the Secondary School Črnomelj, Elizabeta Prus, journalist from our local TV station Vaš kanal, Verica Marušič, president of the jouth centre Bit Črnomelj, Klemen Vitkovič, chairman of the board of an insurance company Tilia, Andrej Kavšek, musician, Rober Strmec, film-maker, Uroš Raztresen, printer, Rober Glaser as well as two representatives from the parents board, Branka Joh and Roman Košmerl. The second jury consisted of Secondary School students, children from the Working centre VDC Črnomelj and children from our school.

The jury members looked at the videos very carefully and accordingly to the rules, voted for the best three videos.

Through video conference, we welcomed other project members from England and Greece. We also learned the results of the vote in England.

The best three videos will be presented at the main S-Factor event on the 9th of July in Sheffield, England.

We hope our two videos make it to the final.

You can see all the videos and vote for the best three until Friday, the 26th of June 2015, http://www.momentum-interactive.co.uk/.
