PLAY ATTENTION – A NEW PROGRAM FOR CHILDREN AT THE COUNCELLING OFFICE

The school’s counselling office has a new learning program Play Attention Learning System, which helps children to develop and extend attention and concentration. It is intended for children with ADHD, attention deficit, autism, dyslexia, brain damage, but it can also be used by adults with Alzheimer’s or Parkinson’s disease for memory training.
The purpose of using Play Attention is:
• developing attention;
• reduction of symptoms of hyperactive disorder;
• developing memory capabilities;
• ability to exclude external disturbing stimuli;
• enabling the completion of tasks;
• developing organizational skills.
After the use of the program, children become more alert, they can easily follow work at school and control their emotions or reactions (impulse reduction). It is intended for children older than 6 years.
Play Attention contains interesting video games that we choose for each child individually. The game is played using a special bracelet, which is placed on the child’s arm or leg. This bracelet sends information about the brain activity. Thus, the player receives feedback, as it focuses on the task. Therefore, he controls the course of the game with his attention. Such a way does not represent the classical learning that children often have problems with, but rather becomes the kind of entertainment they like to perceive as a game.

On Monday, January 28th, 2019, a presentation and training for the use of the Play Attention device, conducted by Mr. Marko Ferek from the Association Budjenje iz Zagreba. We could have tried our attention skills and found that it was not that easy at all.

On Friday, December 14th, 2018, teachers from our school and Elementary School Dragotin Kette from Novo mesto, visited the Gustavo Šiliha School in Maribor, more precisely the Expert Center COMP @ S.

The mentors presented the organization of their center for integration and support of children and adolescents, which is a part of a network of professional institutions offering support and guidance to children with special needs and their families. The organization is co-financed by the Republic of Slovenia and the European Union Social Fund.

In the Podravje region, a center of highly competent experts was established as a test project. With new solutions, strategies and methods of work, they offer comprehensive support for inclusive education to children with special needs, their families, kindergartens, schools and other institutions working with children or adolescents with special needs.

With great interest we observed their rich collection of didactic tools, which are also available for lend. We exchanged past experiences with the test project and finally invited colleagues from Podravje to visit Bela Krajina.
